Best Systems for Improving Your Motor Yacht

Whether you use your motor yacht for long distance cruising expeditions or weekend getaways, the quality and reliability of the equipment and systems on board can make or break your time on the water. That’s why the experts at Imtra are here to recommend systems and equipment that can make your time aboard more enjoyable, relaxing and safe.

Fin Stabilizers

Whether you’re powering through some ocean swells en-route to a new destination, or anchored outside of a breakwater exposed to the waves, keeping the boat as flat as possible with a stabilization system is the best way to keep everyone on board comfortable and free of seasickness. While there are many options for stabilization systems, there are none better for a large motor yacht than Vector Fin stabilization system from Sleipner. While gyro stabilizers certainly have a lot of benefits, larger vessels require either one extremely large and heavy gyro or multiple gyros meant for smaller boats installed together. So for larger motor yachts, fin stabilizers often make more sense.

Fin stabilizers have been around for decades, but the technology remained stagnant for a long time with minor tweaks to the original straight-fin design. That is until Sleipner released their Vector Fin with it’s patented, curved design which resulted in more stabilization force than traditional straight fins. In addition to generating more force in the direction it’s most needed to stabilize the boat, the curved fins also provide a bit of lift to the boat when it is underway, which offsets and often even exceeds any amount of drag that is created by having the fin sticking off the bottom of the hull. This means that your ride will be both smoother and more fuel-efficient with a Vector Fin system.

Bow & Stern Thrusters

Navigating a crowded harbor or anchorage in a motor yacht can be a nerve-wracking experience, particularly at idle speeds when larger boats are least maneuverable. Having properly sized bow and stern thrusters installed can significantly improve the yacht’s maneuverability and reduce the stress for the captain steering the boat in tight areas.  Sleipner offers a full range of over 170 different thruster models in AC or DC electrical power and hydraulic power. With such a wide range they offer a solution for virtually every size and type of motor yacht. All of Sleipner’s hydraulic and AC thrusters have proportional speed control by nature, and they also offer a range of DC-powered proportional speed thrusters. The advantage to using a proportional speed thruster is that it allows you to oversize the thruster for your boat to have the necessary thrust to maneuver in high-wind or high-current conditions, but you don’t have to use all of that power all of the time when using the proportional control. For hydraulic thrusters, Sleipner also offers the complete hydraulic package to power thrusters, stabilizers and any other hydraulic equipment aboard.

Battery Monitoring & Charging

When you’re exploring on your yacht, moving around to different anchorages and docks, managing the different power sources on board is crucial to making sure everything runs properly for you, your crew and your guests. Imtra offers the complete range of battery chargersinvertersconvertersmonitoring systems, solar chargers and more from the experts at Victron Energy. Victron’s systems can help you maintain DC-and AC-powered systems so that you are not limited in what type of electrical systems, appliances and gadgets you can run on board, and you can charge from a variety of sources like shore-power, generator power and an alternator, all in one system. Whenever you aren’t aboard, you can keep an eye on all of your electrical systems from anywhere in the world with Victron’s Bluetooth Smart Monitoring and the Victron Connect app on your smartphone or tablet.

Interior Lighting

Having the proper lighting throughout the interior of your yacht is important to making it feel like home when you’re vacationing aboard. Whether it’s having the right ambient lighting for the dining area, toe lights in the passageways so you can see where you’re going at night, or reading lights you can switch on and off without leaving bed, having the proper lighting specific to each area of the yacht can drastically improve your time on board.

Imtra carries a wide variety of marine-grade interior LED lighting, offering solutions for all areas of your yacht and can be tailored to fit your exact needs.
